A woman in South Africa was arrested after she was reportedly caught trying to sell her baby online. The woman, was caught by a police sting at a local KFC, after she posted online a classifieds ad offering to sell her 19-month-old son.
She was offering 5,000 rand, the equivalent of about $346 USD.
She made the post on Gumtree, a free classifieds posting site.
Titled “baby car seat” the post reads:
“Hy my name is anonymous from Pmb am selling my 19months old boy 5000.”
The woman, who is now 20 years old, apparently pled guilty for trafficking charges, money laundering and violations of the Children’s Act.
Reports say she became pregnant at the age of 17, was forced to leave school to raise the baby.
While it’s not clear why drove her to try and sell her baby, it is believed that she didn’t know which of two boyfriend was the father and that neither man was in the picture to help raise the baby. Although it seems she may have been paying some child support in recent months.
It is not known who has custody of the child, but he is not with his mother.
