Mother Dies in House Fire Next to Daughter After Running Inside to Save Her

A loving mother and her seven-year-old daughter were killed in a fire that engulfed their home on Tuesday in Arlington, Virginia.

After Mary Barkes called 911 for assistance, she ran back into the burning house to save her youngest daughter, Emily, who was asleep in the upstairs bedroom, reports NBC Washington.

Her husband, Bill, and their oldest daughter, Sarah, 11, survived the tragedy.

Despite neighbors and firefighters wanting to save their lives, the flames, smoke and heat were too intense to go inside.

The home apparently did not have any smoke detectors, but the cause of the fire is still being investigated.
