Mother Strangles Children Because She Wanted “Normal Kids,” Found Not Guilty

Saiqa Akhter, the mother who strangled her two autistic children back in July 2010, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity.

After calling 911 to report her crime, Akhter told the operator that she strangled her five-year-old son, Zain, and two-year-old daughter, Faryaal, because they were a nuisance, saying, “I want normal kids.”

She first tried to kill her kids with bathroom cleaner, but since they wouldn’t drink it, she used a wire to asphyxiate them.

On the recording, the woman tells the operator, “I killed them. I killed both of them. I killed my both kids. … They are not doing anything. They are just blue. They are not taking any breaths. Their heart is not beating.”

According to the Dallas Morning News, she was diagnosed as insane and schizophrenic when her children were killed. She will remain at a state mental hospital for treatment until a judge approves her release.

Originally, Akhter was charged with capital murder, but her attorneys pleaded that she belonged in a mental institution and not a penitentiary.
