The search for aliens may be over soon, reports top NASA scientists!
According to NASA astronomer Kevin Hand, things are about to get really interesting: “I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe.”
This will be made possible by a series of new telescopes that will be developed in time.
“What we didn’t know five years ago is that perhaps 10 to 20 percent of stars around the us have Earth-size planets in the habitable zone. It’s within our grasp to pull off a discovery that will change the world forever,” said Matt Mountain, director and Webb telescope scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute.
Thanks to the Kepler telescope, the past five years have allowed scientists to identify nearly 5,000 planets. This is the most found since the science of astronomy was born.
The next generation of telescopes are going to be even more exciting. Meet the James Webb Space Telescope:
This artist rendering provided by NASA.gov will enable scientists to expand their search far beyond our solar system by 2018. Additionally, NASA is will be launching the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) in 2017. The goal will be to find “another Earth.”
“Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘that star has a planet like Earth’,” explains Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Once this occurs, scientists say it is very possible we’ll discover extraterrestrial life.
“Just imagine the moment, when we find potential signatures of life. Imagine the moment when the world wakes up and the human race realizes that its long loneliness in time and space may be over — the possibility we’re no longer alone in the universe,” said Mountain.
While this news may be a surprise to some, alien-hunters and alleged alien abductees may very well roll their eyes.
In response to NASA’s YouTube Video “Space Experts Discuss the Search for Life in the Universe at NASA,” watchers are continually sharing their theories:
Watch the video yourself, and let us know what you think. Do you think aliens exist? We’d love to know.
