A new restaurant in Toronto, Canada is shaking up the dining industry.
Signs is Canada’s first restaurant with a full waitstaff of deaf people and requires patrons to communicate only in sign language.
The goal of this restaurant is to give deaf people an opportunity they wouldn’t normally have. Manager Rachel Shemnel explains this type of business model is “opening up a whole new workforce for the deaf community.”
Over 200 deaf people applied to work at the restaurant, with only 50 making the cut. Many have no restaurant experience but owner Anjan Manikumar describes them as enthusiastic and extremely talented.
As for the customers, you don’t have to know sign language in order to dine at the restaurant. The menus are accompanied by illustrated signs to help.
