NH Mom Arrested After Her Kids Ask Police for Ride to School

A five-year-old, a three-year-old, and a one-year-old walk into a police station in the middle of winter with their jackets unzipped and shoes on the wrong feet.

No, it’s not the beginning of a bad joke, but rather the result of a mother’s neglect and the five-year-old’s endearing (albeit confusing) desire to get to school. A Farmington, New Hampshire mom was arrested and is facing charges for leaving her three young children home alone for over an hour.

Katarina Short, 26, allegedly left the children alone for more than an hour while she went to run an errand on Tuesday morning. Determined to get to school in  his mother’s absence, the five-year-old suited himself and his siblings up for a trek to school and ventured into the harsh winter outside. The temperature was about 0 degrees Fahrenheit.

Unable to get their jackets zipped on his own, he came to the police, alerting authorities to the Short’s neglect, which seems like it’d been going on for awhile. Just look at that footage of the children calmly wandering through the snow, like this is nothing new for them.

Short, a single mom, was charged with endangering the welfare of her children, as well as lying to the police. She claimed that she had left the children with a babysitter while went to Wal-Mart for groceries.

Police say there was never a babysitter.
