Ayperi Alekseeva had a truly odd addiction that drives her to compulsively eat chunks of her own hair and pieces of wool carpeting. The 18-year-old, a resident of Kyrgyzstan, ate so much that eventually she became unable to eat or drink anything without becoming ill.
Doctors in the nation’s capital city of Bishkek found the source of the issue — a nine-pound hairball blocking Alekseeva’s digestive tract. The doctors had to perform emergency life-saving surgery to remove the hairball.
There are pictures of the monstrosity at the bottom of the article, but be warned, it is a little disgusting, as you might expect a bloodied hunk of hair and wool to be.
Professor Bahadir Bebezov, who performed the operation, spoke with the Metro UK regarding the procedure:
The parents brought her in after she started losing weight, and she couldn’t eat anything. By the time we got her, should could not even drink water. We realized we needed to operate immediately. It was actually the only alternative, nothing else would solve the problem. In fact, her stomach was so badly swollen from hair and bits of wool from the carpet that it literally just oozed out soon as the wall of the stomach was cut.
Alekseeva recovered from surgery, and promises to stop eating hair.
