After getting engaged last year, Michelle Kawn wed United States Coast Guard Lt. Clay Pell over the weekend.
The two met back in April 2011 and married in front of 250 guests including Kwan’s fellow Olympic champions Brian Boitano, Dick Button, and Dorothy Hamill. Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and his wife, Stephanie also attended the romantic ceremony.
Kwan, 32, is said to have worn an ivory Vera Wang gown while her new husband dressed in full uniform.
Kwan and Pell shared self-written vows at the First Unitarian Church on the East Side of Providence. They surprised guests by sharing a sweet kiss spontaneously during the ceremony, and Kwan cried tears of joy.
Although Kwan, a two-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion is known worldwide, not much is known about 31-year-old Clay Pell. Pell is the grandson of the late U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell and is also a JAG lawyer and director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House.
Kwan shares a political connection as well—she’s a public policy envoy with the Department of State.
Of meeting her future husband, Kwan revealed “I never was one who believed in love at first sight, but I have to admit it happened for us.”
Congrats to the newlyweds!
