Paul Walker, the actor best known for his role in the Fast and Furious franchise of films, died today in a car crash. He was 40 years old.

The accident occurred in Santa Clarita — a city just north of Los Angeles. TMZ reported that Walker’s Porsche apparently lost control and crashed into a tree, bursting into flames and exploding. Walker was reportedly not the driver, but rather the passenger in the vehicle. He had been taking people on test drives of the car during a car show to raise money for victims of the typhoon in the Philippines.

The Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station confirmed with Us Weekly that there were two fatalities, and it happened at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Just 30 minutes ago, this tweet was released from Walker’s official Twitter account:

Walker’s rep, Ame Van Iden, gave no specific details of the event, but instead released an email stating, “Sadly I must confirm that Paul did pass away this afternoon.”
Here’s a Twitter photo from the accident, which was posted on New York Daily News.
