E! has just gotten confirmation from Comedy Central that the network will cut jokes made about the late Paul Walker during the Roast of Justin Bieber TV special.
“Roasts often push the limits of good taste and we give the participants full reign to try things knowing we have the edit to shape the show,” a Comedy Central spokesperson told E! News in a statement. “Sometimes the line is discovered by crossing it. The Paul Walker references will not be in the telecast.”
Walker, best known for his role in the Fast and Furious series, died in a car crash on November 30, 2013. He’s been in the news lately, as the next Fast and Furious movie debuts April 3 — which he was filming when he died.
So what were the offending remarks? Comedienne Natasha Leggero took a swipe at fellow roaster Martha Stewart. (Yes, Martha Stewart was there making jokes. Who knew?) In this moment, Leggero tossed off, “I’m not saying Martha Stewart is old, but she needs a new Walker more than the Fast and Furious franchise.”
Another moment featured Jeffrey Ross saying to Ludacris, “‘Move bitch! Get out the way!’ That’s what Paul Walker should’ve said to that tree.” According to E!, Ross got booed after telling this joke, to which he asked, “Too soon? Too fast? Too furious? Give me a break, people! I’m trying to save this kid’s life.”
A visibly offended Ludacris motioned to cut at one point during the taping, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The event was taped in honor of Bieber’s 21st birthday on March 14, and it will debut on the network March 30. (Click here for a sneak peek of the show.)
