The Monsanto Controversy: Why So Many People Hate the Agricultural Biotech Firm

For those of you unfamiliar with the Monsanto controversy, the company produces genetically altered crops. This includes patented “Roundup Ready” soybeans, corn and cotton, which are genetically altered to tolerate treatments of its Roundup weedkiller. However, nature doesn’t stay stuck on one farm or another, and organic farmers and others have worried for years that they will be sued by Monsanto for patent infringement if their crops get accidentally contaminated with Monsanto biotech crops.

Plus, some people just don’t like the idea of consuming genetically altered crops — and those people are very vocal.

We wanted to gain a greater understanding as to why so many Americans dislike the $16 billion agricultural biotech firm. This slideshow captures some of the common frustrations held by millions of people around the world. Some of the images present “facts,” which have not been fact-checked by our team. Our goal is simply to reveal the commonly held opinions of consumers in the U.S. and beyond.
