Police Follow Trail of Snacks and Lotto Tickets to Find Convenience Store Thief

What happens when you follow a trail of discarded snacks and lottery tickets? It turns out, you find a drunken suspected thief covered in nacho cheese. In a story that sounds like a bizarrely twisted on a fairy tale, that’s exactly what happened when Iowa City police investigated a convenience store burglary.

Police responded around 11:20 p.m. to a burglary report, and didn’t have far to look for a suspect.

Officers followed a trail of snacks and lottery tickets only about 100 yards, where they found 20-year-old Francisco Munoz. Described as wearing a shirt “covered in nacho cheese” and having bloodshot, watery eyes, Munoz was given a breath test that showed a blood alcohol content of .270 percent.

Munoz was also found with two cases of beer at the time.

Allegedly Munoz used a brick to break into the store, and caused at least $1,000 in damages.

He was promptly arrested and charged with burglary, criminal mischief and public intoxication.
