For some reason, watching a baby praying mantis emerge from its egg mass is disturbingly awesome. Mother Nature never ceases to amaze and fascinate us.
When placed in a warm location, the egg mass, called an ootheca, will produce up to 200 mantises. The babies resemble small, wingless adults. Before reaching maturity, a mantis will molt five to ten times.
The typical lifespan of a praying mantis in the wild is approximately 10-12 months.
