We know getting an entire class of toddlers to take a nap at the same time is not an easy task to accomplish. With their high energy levels and penchant for stirring up trouble, it’s enough to make a person go crazy.
But that’s still no excuse for what a preschool teacher from Morgan Hill, CA did. In order to get the kids to go to sleep, she resorted to putting sleeping pills in the children’s sippy cups to lull them to sleep.
The find was made by a colleague who reportedly witnessed the 59-year-old Debbie Gratz slipping something into the children’s drinks on Friday. By the time she alerted the police any potential evidence was gone, but Gratz admitted to the deed and revealed the substance in question was Sominex, an adult sleeping pill.
Morgan Hill Kiddie Academy, where Gratz had worked on and off for five years, promptly fired her and later issued a statement saying “The safety and welfare of children is our top priority…. We have an exceptionally qualified staff of teachers who have chosen early childhood education because of their love of working with children.”
Upon learning of the incident, parents were understandably outraged. Bianca Flores is the mother of 2-year-old Caleb who was in Gratz’s care and suffers from seizures. Flores said she is going to get him checked out to see if they are related to the drug.
“Sickening, sick to my stomach, I want to throw up” she said of the incident. “I’m not angry, I’m just sad, disturbing, I don’t know what to think.”
Gratz was arrested on Monday night, but has since been released from custody with another court appearance scheduled later this month, according to the AP.
