Rikers Island Prison Inmates Save Female Guard from Would-Be Rapist

A group of inmates at New York City’s Rikers Island prison rescued a female guard on Saturday from a large prisoner who had cornered the woman and was attempting to rape her, NY Daily News reports.

The assailant Raleek Young, a 29-year-old inmate weighing 290 pounds, grabbed the guard in a choke hold and began masturbating. He dragged her into a nearby bathroom and blocked her from opening the security door.

The inmates, witnessing Young’s actions, helped officers responding to the cries for distress tear out the Plexiglass window of a watch-post to allow access to the bathroom. One skinny inmate slipped through the small crack and opened the security door from the inside, allowing other inmates to rush in and incapacitate Young until further help could arrive.

NY Daily News reports:

The majority of the attack was caught on video, a source who watched the tape said.

Young was able to get inside the bubble area after he claimed he needed to pick up a mattress in another unit and had to pass through the watch post.

He’s serving a five-to-10-year sentence for raping a 13-year-old girl in 2007, court records show.
