Her name was Ruth Malcomson.
Earlier today, Reddit user OctaneBoost posted her photo and the Internet was quick to unleash their judgments about her appearance.
The Philadelphia native was the nation’s second woman to be crowned Miss America. In 1924, she beat 85 rivals for the title, and was described to be as “beautiful beyond the dream of poets.”
Back then, votes were given based on physical appearance, poise and personality. There weren’t any talent contests during this time.
Allegedly, her greatest joy didn’t even come from winning the pageant. She told reporters that it was actually being a part of her Philadelphia church choir, because at heart, she was “a home girl.”
Malcomson died in 1988 at the age of 82 in Broomall, Delaware County.
