They are iconic for their on-screen chemistry, and they even dated in real life. But The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes has another story to tell VH1 about the film’s stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, and it isn’t a love story!
Ryan Gosling was personally chosen by Cassavetes to play Noah, while Rachel McAdams earned the part through an audition process. “A lot of studios wouldn’t have had the courage to put two relatively unknown people in a movie like this,” said Cassavetes about casting the pair.
But unfortunately for him, the pair’s stellar performance was a bumpy road because the two fought constantly on set.
It got so bad that during one big scene, Gosling didn’t even want to perform with McAdams, asking that she be taken and replaced with another actress to read him his scene-partner’s lines.
“I can’t. I can’t do it with her,” Gosling told Cassavetes at the time. “I’m just not getting anything from this.”
Cassavetes said that particular conflict required what he calls an impromptu therapy session, taking the two actors into a room with the producers while the actors screamed at each other.
“It got better after that,” said Cassavetes. “I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.”
He said the rest of the film wasn’t easy, but it was smoother sailing than before. Check out the video above for more.
