Saudi Arabia, a nation now notorious for its widespread female repression, reached new heights of insanity this week by outlawing so-called “tempting eyes.”
The law states that women found to have alluring eyes will be forced by officials to wear a full veil to cover their entire face. Dissenters and social media critics have already dubbed the law “stupid,” according to Pakistan Today.
In response to the criticism, a spokesman for the Saudi Arabian Committee for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, Sheikh Motlab al Nabet, said they were within their rights to ban alluring eyes.
“The men of the committee will interfere to force women to cover their eyes, especially the tempting ones,” he said. “We have the right to do so.”
It’s unclear how officials will determine which women have tempting eyes and which don’t, but one unnamed Saudi journalist suggested they meant “uncovered eyes with a nice shape and makeup.” He then added that makeup might not even be necessary.
Prince Naif, the heir to the Saudi throne now shaping up to be just as oppressive as his draconian father King Abdullah, said he is in full support of the new law.
“The committee is supported by all sides,” he said. “It should be supported because it is a pillar of Islam. If you are a Muslim, you should support the committee.”
Now taking bets on how they’ll one-up the insanity of this law. I’m guessing they’ll jail women whose full-body dresses cling a little too closely to their hips.
