Remember the nerdy guy on Saved By the Bell? Screech couldn’t hurt a fly, could he?
Dustin Diamond was sentenced Thursday to four months in jail for stabbing a man during a bar brawl on Christmas day in Wisconsin. He was found guilty of carrying a concealed weapon and disorderly conduct
Not only did Diamond apologize to the court for fighting on what he called “a night that centers around celebrating peace and love,” he told the judge and jury: “I want it to be clear that this situation will be not repeated again.” He also said the fight was the “single most terrifying experience of my entire life.”
Judge Paul Malloy still sentenced him to 120 days in jail and 15 months probation. He also ordered Diamond to pay more than $1,000 in restitution, in order to “send a message to the community that we’re just not going to live like this.”
The fight happened in the Grand Avenue Saloon in Port Washington. Diamond was there with his girlfriend Amanda Schutz when a group of drunk and disorderly people began throwing insults and being rude. Diamond said he knew a brawl was going to happen so he paid his bill and was about to get their coats when he looked back and saw that his girlfriend was bleeding after being punched by another woman. Two men were holding her hair. He alleged that when he moved towards his girlfriend a man grabbed him. At first Diamond said that he’d retaliated by stabbing the man with a pen. He then later admitted he’d used a knife.
Diamond told the jury that he did not mean to stab the man, but that it happened because there was chaos and people grabbing at him while he tried to break free.
The wound was not life threatening and the victim said he initially had no idea he’d been cut.
