A Guy Went Snorkeling in the Colorado River — He Never Expected to Find This

A swimmer on a dive near the Cienega Springs boat ramp in the Colorado River stumbled upon a gruesome discovery: Two human skeletons sat resting at the bottom of the watery domain, both covered in algae. They were still stuck in their chairs, as though they had been unknowingly sent to their deaths.

Was this some kind of travel accident, a murder where the two were killed execution style, or an elaborate prank?

Naturally frightened, the diver called the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department to investigate. According to a release from officials, a member of the fire department went underwater to investigate and recorded video of what he found. (Raw footage of the dive is posted below.) As the diver approached it soon became clear that these were actually two fake skeletons sitting in lawn chairs.

One of the skeletons was holding a sign that read “Bernie living the dream in the river August 16, 2014,” according to the sheriff’s department’s Facebook page. It’s been assumed by some that this is in reference to the movie Weekend at Bernie’s and its sequel. In the 1989 comedy, two young insurance workers find their boss, Bernie, dead and pretend he’s still alive for various reasons. It was a pretty big comedy hit, and if you really care that much about the plot, we have it posted below.

“Although the call itself was resource intensive, both the Sheriff’s Office and Buckskin Fire were happy to find that the remains weren’t real and thanked the reporting party for making the call,” the La Paz County Sheriff’s Department reported on Facebook.

According to Viral Nova, the police don’t intend on finding who actually put these fake skeletons in the river. Instead, they will be displaying them outside their own department as a joke.

Weekend at Bernies (summary from Amazon.com):

Hilarious performances by Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman make this comedy a “good old, knockdown slapstick” (The Hollywood Reporter)! It sounded like a great weekend away at their boss Bernie’s beachside pleasure palace. But when working stiffs Richard and Larry (McCarthy and Silverman) arrive to find a real stiff – their murdered boss – they’re forced to concoct a crazy scheme to avoid being implicated and/or dead themselves! With Bernie propped up and his death effectively covered up, Richard and Larry’s weekend escape becomes exactly that, as they dodge curious babes, a curtain of bullets and one confused hit man!
