So You Think You Can Dance Season 9’s “Top 20” Dance Routine

Random observation: You never really how long a title So You Think You Can Dance is until you’re forced to type it out. Hence, from hereon in, we’ll be using SYTYCD. Moving on…

In case you missed last night’s episode, we got a chance to see the show’s top 20 dancers perform. There were the usual partnering where each was critiqued by the judges, but there was also a major group number involving all the dancetestants. Judges this week included Kenny Ortega, who everyone mentions as the director of High School Musical, but who we know and love for choreographing Michael Jackson’s concerts and features like Dirty Dancing and Xanadu, and who directed the Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy hit movie feature film Hocus Pocus; yes, we do hold a camp love for Mr. Ortega. He played the role of guest judge alongside Nigel Lythgoe and Mary Murphy.

While we could go through all the SYTYCD cast and all their duet performances, that’s just a lot of work. Seriously, people, we’re talking 20 dancers and we can’t remember most of their names or dance styles at this point. Okay, that’s a lie. We have the dance duets listed below. But if you want to check all those out, you should be DVRing SYTYCD and watching it on TV. Or clicking through YouTube. We’re here to offer the main highlight: the group number.

The group number last night came from Christopher Scott offering a Mad Men-inspired look with a lot of props and jumps and flashy bits. It’s hard to judge whether or not the routine was brilliant from watching it on television. There’s so many people moving about, making it difficult to focus on any one person’s skills or moments. The fact that no one tripped over one another was brilliant in our minds.

Check out the video and see who was paired with whom, below.
