The Johannesburg Zoo in South Africa just said goodbye to the very last of its polar bear population.
A 28-year-old bear named Wang had been partners with GeeBee, another bear at the zoo for 27 years before GeeBee passed away earlier this year.
After months of mourning his close friend’s loss, Wang too died on Wednesday at the age of 28. The zoo had to make the tough decision of putting the bear down as he was suffering from liver failure, chronic arthritis, and some may say, a broken heart.
Dr.Brett Gardener, chief veterinarian at the zoo, assures Wang’s last weeks were well spent and filled with treats, celebrations and lots of love.
The zoo does not plan to replace the polar bears.
