Darsh Patel, a 22-year-old Rutgers student, was killed by a bear while hiking in New Jersey. Patel is the first known person to be killed by a bear in the Garden State.
According to photos obtained from his cell phone by police, Patel photographed the 300-pound black bear in the Apshawa Preserve in West Milford before it chased him down and mauled him.
Although the incident occurred back in September, it wasn’t until yesterday that police released these photos taken before the attack.
“They stopped and took photographs of the bear with their cellphones and the bear began walking towards them,” the police report said.
