Teacher Asks Teens to Write Suicide Note, Enrages Parents

Parents of students at York Prep, a pricey private school in New York City, are furious at a creative writing teacher who asked students as young as 14 years old to write their own suicide note, reports the New York Post.

The assignment was based on a suicidal character in the book, “The Secret Life of Bees.” It asked students to write from the perspective of this character and posed the questions: “How would you justify ending your life? What reasons would you give?”

Although parents have called English teacher Jessica Barrish’s assignment “inappropriate” and “outrageous,” other educators believe these reactions are a little extreme.

Simon Critchley, a philosophy professor at The New School University in Greenwich Village said of the incident, “I don’t see why this is inappropriate at all. I think it might even help students acquire a more mature and reflective approach to a hugely important topic.”
