Setting Yourself on Fire: the Internet Challenge That Won’t Go Away

Would you do the cinnamon challenge (trying to swallow a tablespoon of the spice), take the neknominate challenge (drinking a pint of an alcoholic beverage, usually beer, in one gulp) and then uploading footage of you doing those deeds onto the internet?

Yes? Well, how about the fire challenge?

The fire challenge may be the latest craze on the internet, and you can learn more about it in the video above. But here’s the quick summary: People have been posting videos themselves being doused with flammable fluid before lighting themselves on fire, all as part of a dare.

This extremely dangerous fad has caused a number of challengers to get injured – big surprise.

One Kentucky teenager suffered from second-degree burns after taking the dare and setting his whole torso on fire.

His excuse, as relayed in The Washington Post? “I don’t know, I wasn’t thinking really.”

Some participants, having learned from their mistake, are now trying to warn other teens about the risks — as seen in the second video on this page. However, despite what seems to be an obvious risk, the fire challenge is increasing in popularity and many Twitter users are expressing their anger over it.

“Our generation is getting more stupid by the minute. Fire challenge? Y’all kids are stupid as hell,” tweeted one user.
