The Strange World of the Wild, Wild Web

With over 20 billion page views per month, Craigslist is pretty much your one-stop shop and probably the last frontier for buying and selling (literally) anything.

Aside from a great deal of classified advertisements devoted to housing, for sale items, wanted items, job opportunities and personals, the site is also able to connect you to people and opportunities that would otherwise be out of your reach.

Let’s be honest — the internet can be a truly empowering and strange place.

And Craigslist has certainly developed a reputation for having some of the most unusual adverts on the web.

You don’t need the black market when you’ve got Craigslist.

Despite the site allowing users to flag inappropriate and illegal content that is believed to be in violation of the site’s guidelines, it happens to still be an anything-goes territory where people carry out their illegitimate deeds.

It’s human nature, really.

We think everyone is well aware of the gamble you play when using a classified service, and some people really take it to the next level when they are desperate to make ends meet.

One of our writers here in the office was shocked to see that people were offering free rent in exchange for sex when she was looking for a room in Orange County. Do people actually do this?

The state of the economy has people doing a number of insane things to get money.

People Selling Their Body Parts

Yes, we’re talking real body parts! People are willing to become live donors in order to obtain a quick payoff. In desperate need to get out of debt or pay for a college tuition, some are willing to go to great lengths. By the way, this is illegal in the US.

But it is fair game in other countries!

You may have heard the story of a boy in China who sold one of his kidneys so that he could afford to buy an iPad2. Oh, you haven’t? Well, apparently Apple products are in huge demand in foreign countries and are seen as a major status symbol by young consumers. There is no shortage of folks willing to part with a vital organ in exchange for cash or other seemingly exclusive items.

Potent, Addictive Narcotics for Sale

These days, illegal drugs seem to be readily available around every corner you turn. And on Craigslist, you can pretty much find anything you can imagine. With just a few keywords, we were able to find numerous postings advertising “pain killers” and “pain relief.” No prescription needed here.

Considering the staggering amount of people currently hooked on prescription drugs, it is quite disturbing to see how easy it is to buy these things off some random stranger online. Everything from Oxycodone, Vicodin, Adderall, Percocet and Loritab can be easily obtained and are sold at cheap enough prices that children have access to them.

Hit Man for Hire

Chris Hansen from Dateline NBC recently found a man on Craigslist suggesting that he was a hit man. When Hansen sat down with him to discuss the details of what he was capable of doing, it was surprising to find out that the man had been in business for over 15 years and admitted to killing and crippling a few people.

There’s no telling how many other people out there are offering such a service to the public!

False Pay Stubs, Tax Returns and Diplomas

Do you need a legit diploma from an Ivy League school? Craigslist has you covered. Need to say you went to Harvard or Princeton? No problem. Scammers are also advertising that they can create false pay stubs and bank statements for those interested in getting into a home or apartment, as well as provide you with fake W-2 and tax return forms so that you can tap into someone else’s earnings.

When you have a venue where you’re able to offer or ask anything in the world, you know you’re bound to stumble upon some stuff that’s not for the faint of heart.

So, if you desire to use your time in an environment that’s wholesome, you’re on the wrong site.
