Thieves Rob Police at Gunpoint–Leave Them Locked In Their Own Van

You would expect criminals to steer clear of law enforcement while breaking the law—this was not the case with the bold robbery that recently took place in South Africa. A bold band of thieves actually targeted two police officers and robbed them at gunpoint, before locking them in their own police van, The Mirror reports.

The incident took place in broad daylight, and the whole thing was caught on camera.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila told eNCA the robbery occurred during lunchtime as the two policemen stopped at a roadside food stand for lunch. They parked their marked police vehicle off to the side, and were suddenly surrounded by the gang of thieves, who took their weapons and backed the officers into their own parked van.

After the assailants left the scene, Malila said onlookers rushed to aid the officers by getting them out of the van and giving chase to the suspects—who had left on foot.

The officers called in back-up and pursued the suspects. The suspects hijacked a car before crashing it during the chase.

Three men were then arrested, and three weapons were recovered at the scene. Two of the weapons were those taken from the officers, while the third is linked to another shooting from earlier in the year.

Malila said they are still looking for suspects in the robbery who may have escaped.
