For many, part of the Christmas holiday season is marked by viewing A Charlie Brown Christmas — which is now airing in its 50th year. Sure, it features the fun adventures of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus and the whole Peanuts crew, but there’s something much deeper about the special itself, according to Jeannie Schulz, widow of Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz.
“It points out our greed, our commercialism,” she says. “And it points them out with humor so we can laugh at them — laugh at ourselves.”
Last week, NPR’s Morning Addition featured a short report on the special (embedded below), which included some fun facts about the program that we’d never known. From there, we started looking into more A Charlie Brown Christmas trivia, and were able to come up with the list above. From facts about how the voice actors were chosen, to the iconic soundtrack and issues with advertisers, it will give you a whole new appreciation when watching the holiday special you know and love.
