Today is National Donut Day, which falls on the first Friday of June. Random factoid: The Salvation Army coined the unofficial holiday in 1938 to commemorate the female volunteers who served doughnuts and coffee to soldiers during World War I. And historians (in the donut industry?) credit the group’s effort with first popularizing doughnuts in America.
For most of us, however, this isn’t so much about celebrating that delicious, frosted or filled (or both) cakey product, it’s about getting free donuts.
That’s right, numerous companies join the National Donut Day celebration by offering free treats to customers. Here’s what we dug up.
Dunkin’ Donuts: One free donut of your choice with the purchase of any beverage. It’s good all day today, June 7.
Entenmann’s: With a nod to the holiday’s history, Entenmann’s baked goods company will donate $1 to the Salvation Army for every person who “likes” the Entenmann’s Facebook Page — now through June 15. You can also enter the National Donut Day Sweepstakes by June 30th for your chance to win free Entenmann’s donuts for a year!
Krispy Kreme: In our mind, this is the best of the bunch. Click the link to find out which participating locations in the U.S. and Canada are giving out free donuts today—no purchase necessary.
