Piyah Martell was born with a birth defect that caused her to have a shortened spine and tiny legs. Her condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome has forced her to learn how to walk on her hands. In an intenview with the Daily Mail, Piyah talked about her struggles in school and about being bullied as a child.
“When I was younger I used to wish I was like other people,” she said. “It took me a long time to learn to be proud of who I am.”
Her sense of identity was an issue, but she didn’t come out with the fact that she wanted to be a woman until she was 15. According to her, her family was supportive.
Today in her early twenties she is creating YouTube videos, showing the world who she is through her Vlog series and choreographed music videos. While her past may have been hard as a transgender young woman with no legs she is very hopeful about the future. “I see myself as a big superstar, surrounded by glamour and having lots of fans,” she says. “I want to show people that even If you have a birth defect it doesn’t matter, you can live your life however you want.”
