Twitterverse Goes Insane Over J.J. Abrams as Star Wars Director

In case you missed it, entertainment website TheWrap revealed that J.J. Abrams (of Star Trek, Lost and Alias fame) will direct Star Wars Episode VII film for Disney. Initially, Abrams didn’t seem interested when he did an interview with Hollywood Life:

“Look, Star Wars is one of my favorite movies of all time. I frankly feel that – I almost feel that, in a weird way, the opportunity for whomever it is to direct that movie, it comes with the burden of being that kind of iconic movie and series. I was never a big Star Trek fan growing up, so for me, working on Star Trek didn’t have any of that, you know, almost fatal sacrilege, and so, I am looking forward more than anyone to the next iterations of Star Wars, but I believe I will be going as a paying moviegoer!”

Evidently The Force is stronger than a man with firm feelings. A presumably hefty paycheck probably didn’t hurt, either. And while Disney hasn’t confirmed anything yet, both Variety and Deadline have, with the Deadline source going so far as to say it was a “done deal.” Disney has slated the next Star Wars movie for a 2015 release, with Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt penning the script.

This will probably cause problems for Abrams’ relationship with Paramount, where he’s currently working on the newest Trek film, Star Trek Into Darkness, which opens May 18. Because, you know, movie studios don’t like it when you fraternize among science fiction franchises. This is Abrams’ second Star Trek film since he rebooted the franchise in 2009.

But who cares about all of that? We wanted to see what the Twitterverse was spewing about the incident. Here are some of our favorites — including one from Darth Vader himself!
