According to the Mirror, a group of students at Whitchurch High School in Cardiff, Wales, were banned from wearing shorts. They took fashion matters into their own hands and are protesting by occupying skirts.
“Girls can wear skirts, so I don’t see why we can’t wear shorts. It’s a reasonable protest,” said Tyrone Evelyn, 15, a spokesman for the group. “It’s just appropriate for the weather — we don’t want to be hot and bothered.”
Daily Beast reports that the boys planned their demonstration via Facebook, brought their skirts to school and marched into the headmaster’s office. Threatened with punishment, the boys have since backed down, but say they haven’t given up their fight.
Wales Online notes the boys plan to petition their student council in hopes of changing the uniform policy for next summer, which at present states explicitly, “Trousers are compulsory for boys and optional for girls. These must be full length and plain black.”
Here are four places around the globe where wearing a skirt isn’t an act of dissent.
1. Scotland–a kilt
2. India–a dhoti
3. Sri Lanka–a sarong
4. US–Kanye West and Marc Jacobs…just because.
