United State of Pop: 2012’s Ultimate Mashup is Here

With love a good mashup, but the one we wait for all year long is DJ Earworm’s. For those who aren’t familiar with the musical genius and his work, here’s the low down in his own words: “Basically, what I do is take a bunch of songs apart and put them back together again in a different way.”

That probably didn’t help, so here are the specifics: DJ Earworm (born Jordan Roseman) has been doing his annual “United State of Pop” mashups — each of which contain the top 25 songs of the year — since 2007. He uses the Billboard charts to make his selection of what songs go into each mashup. The result is a rewind of the year’s musical landscape sewn into a very danceable and enjoyable tune.

Some previous mixes have included musical acts such as Rihanna, Lady Antebellum, Adele and Maroon 5 just to name a few.

This year brings back a few of those names as well as newcomers such as Carly Rae Jepsen and Fun. Another thing that’s new this year is the overall feel. DJ Earworm explained to Chicago Magazine that this year’s mashup, “Shine Brighter,” focuses less on the “dance floor feeling” and more on the message of awakening and the emotional feel of the melody.

Judge for yourself. Take a listen to the “United State of Pop 2012 – Shine Brighter” above.
