Voula Papachristou Expelled from 2012 Olympics for Racist Tweet

Imagine the grueling training athletes go through for training for an Olympic spot. It takes years of hard work, sweat, sacrifices, and more. Now, imagine blowing it all by making a stupid and ignorant public remark. That’s exactly what what happened to triple jumper Voula Papachristou of Greece.

On her Twitter account Sunday, Papachristou posted: ”With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!”. When negative backlash ensued, Papachristou defended herself (again through Twitter) responding on Tuesday with “”That’s how I am. I laugh. I am not a CD to get stuck!!! And if I make mistakes, I don’t press the replay! I press Play and move on!!!”

She sung a different tune this morning though, posting five apologetic tweets in less than two hours after the Hellenic Olympic Committee expelled her from the 2012 London Games. Voula-Papachristou-expelled-from-Olympics-for-racist-tweet

On her Facebook and Twitter accounts she posted: ”I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.”

The Hellenic Olympic Committee sent out their own statement today, confirming that Papachristou is ”placed outside the Olympic team for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement.”

Here’s hoping she learns from her mistake. It’s too bad her poor judgement had to cost her a lifelong dream.

Papachristou, who is currently in Athens, had no comment for The Associated Press on this story.
