Fifty Shades of Grey is the hottest selling book right now, quickly catching up on Harry Potter as one of the highest selling books in recent years. Indeed, author EL James seems to have hit gold, with the book occupying slots 1, 2 and 3 of Amazon’s best-seller list for months. This 2011 erotic novel– which if it were being marketed to men would be labeled “light porn”– is set in Seattle. Fifty Shades of Grey is the first installment in a trilogy, and it follows the deepening relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate named Christian Grey. It features a lot of sex scenes, including sizable amounts of bondage, discipline, and SM (sadism and masochism).
However, as Jenny Hutt, SiriusXM host and obsessive Shades fan explained to the New York Post, “[50 Shades] is less about overt sex and more about the things every woman wants. They allegedly have this S&M relationship – but he doesn’t ever hurt her! It’s about women wanting to be adored, ravaged and respected. The book serves as a reminder to women that it’s OK to like sex, to want it. But at its base, it’s romantic.”
