Kazzie Portie, 18, suddenly and tragically lost both of his parents just one week before his high school graduation. Portie’s parents were killed when a drunk driver struck the motorcycle they were driving.
Texas police officer Eric Ellison was the one who was forced to deliver the devastating news to the high-school senior.
As the teen mourned the painful and sudden loss of both parents, he told Ellison he didn’t know what he was going to do about his high school commencement ceremony. His parents were supposed to be there to see him walk during one of the biggest moments of his life.
That’s when Ellison stepped in to support Portie.
Speaking with BuzzFeed, Ellison said:
“I said, ‘You are going to walk! Your mom and dad will have front-row seats looking down from heaven, and I’ll stand in their place. I’ve got your back.’”
And indeed, when Portie’s name was called, and he walked across the stage to receive his diploma—to a standing ovation from his school—Ellison was right there too, with a heart-warming embrace of support.
“Seeing Officer Ellison there to congratulate me meant the world to me. It was so nice to see that he actually showed a genuine care for me and my family’s situation instead of us just being another ‘case.’”
