Watch: How a New Moon Could Form If Something Large Smashed Into Earth

The California Institute of Technology in Pasadena recently put together a video simulation showing how a new moon could be born if something large came barreling through and hit our planet.

The collision between Earth and an object the size of Mars would cause Earth’s mantle to spew out into space, form a disc and eventually cool down and condense to form a satellite – much like our own moon did when it was formed.
