Who doesn’t love parodies? We certainly do. Which is why when we heard that a new one recently hit the web, we were excited. But then we found out it was a Gotye parody, and we weren’t so excited anymore.
The Australian singer’s massive hit “Somebody that I used to know” has taken over the internet since its release last year and has inspired parody video, after parody video, after_you guessed it, parody video. So much so, that the idea of another one of these makes our eyes roll. How many different ways can someone stand a naked guy and girl by a wall, do an abstract paint job on them, and sing the same tune?
Turns out there are more ways than we imagined: We’ve come across a version in which the singer has had too much to drink and sings “I guess I didn’t need that shot/ Now I’m just somebody that needs some clothes,” and a version in which an out-of-luck band laments its woes by dishing out lyrics like “Now and then we like to play one guitar together/And that’s convenient because we only have the one.” There have been versions in which the song takes on various themes from sports, to Star Wars, to best friends who lost their connection.
And now, the latest one puts a political theme to the song. Justin Monticello and Ryan Newbrough of Just New Productions used the tune to make a video that hilariously blasts the current president. It tells the story of disillusioned young college grads pining for the Obama of 2008 who inspired waves of hope and euphoria amongst them when he first took office, but left them unhappy and still waiting four years later.
Taking a jab at everything from Obama’s high unemployment rate, to his promises of change, the song includes lyrics such as “But college ended, had to pay my rent/ at least you’re the first gay president, but the change I got was that I moved in with my mother.”
We know that if you’re anything like us, you’re probably getting tired of Gotye parody videos, but give this one a chance. You can trust us on this. Yes you can!
