Can you say, “Oops…”?
The above raw security footage shows Officer Darryl Jouett, of the Erlanger Police Department in Kentucky, accidentally shoot himself on Saturday evening at around 8:30pm. He and his wife were at the Mercer Garage in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine neighborhood when the incident took place.
According to Captain Michael John of the Cincinatti Police Department:
He was transitioning the holster and transitioning the gun out of his holster. He was going to carry it in his hand as they walked to the car. As he was pulling the gun from the holster, a round discharged, ricocheted in the elevator, struck him in the stomach.
As you’ll see, the officer accidentally shoots himself and he then slumps to the floor. The elevator doors eventually open and Jouett’s wife rushes out to get help. He stumbles out after her, picking up the gun as he exits. Fortunately, they were able to make a call to 911 without anything else happening.
Jouett has been with the Erlanger Police Department for more than 25 years. He was handling his duty-issued .40-caliber semi-automatic handgun.
The off-duty officer was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, and the injury was deemed to be non-life threatening. However, the shooting remains under investigation.
