Think being Santa is all about being around toys and getting to ride reindeer all night long?
Well as it turns out being the big guy isn’t all fun and games. Sometimes being Santa means hanging in mid-air while you’re caught in a very awkward situation.
That’s what happened at England’s Broad Street Mall when a man dressed as Santa descended through a skylight to meet with children and kick off the mall’s holiday season. All was going well as Father Christmas lowered himself, stopping at intervals to wave to the crowd. But then, something went awry – Santa’s beard got stuck in the rappelling device, preventing him from continuing down.
The man playing Santa, Steve Chassell of England’s 11th Battalion Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, remained suspended 15ft in the air for 40 minutes as the show continued without him. Eventually Santa — and his beard — were freed by colleague Marc Hilton, who rappelled down to cut the big guy free.
The 32-year-old Chassell was praised by mall marketing manager Stephanie Maynard, who said “He could have just taken his beard off and let himself down, but he was such a professional and he didn’t want to let the children down.”
Good going Santa, good going.
Watch it all go down (or not) in the clip.
