Stephen Hawking, along with hundreds of artificial intelligence researchers and experts, are calling for a worldwide ban on military robots, warning that they could set off a revolution in weaponry and an arms race much like the nuclear one, only more deadly. They have all signed an open letter warning of a “military artificial intelligence arms race” More than 1,000 people, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, have signed the letter wholeheartedly.
The letter states:
“AI technology has reached a point where the deployment of [autonomous weapons] is – practically if not legally – feasible within years, not decades, and the stakes are high: autonomous weapons have been described as the third revolution in warfare, after gunpowder and nuclear arms.”
Those opposed argued that robots capable of killing is “feasible within years, not decades.” If development is not cut off, it is only a matter of time before the weapons end up in the hands of terrorists, they said.
Unlike drones which require humans to remotely fly aircrafts and make decisions about strikes, the autonomous military robots would search for and engage targets on their own.
Those who are vocal about opposing this new technology say that it’s true that military robots could reduce military casualties by keeping human soldiers off battlefields, but they will probably make going to war that much easier.
The famous physicist Stephen Hawking says that development of artificial intelligence and military robots could be the last human development in history. He predicts that nothing good will come of it.
