When we first caught a glimpse of this apparent orchid, we wondered why it seemed to be moving. Was this some more vibrant version of a Venus fly trap?
Nope, instead this is the orchid mantis, scientific name Hymenopus coronatus, one of nature’s greatest triumphs of camouflage. It’s just one of several species collectively known as the flower mantises — you can probably guess why. It’s four walking legs all resemble orchid flowers enough that it draws in unsuspecting prey.
It’s a true sight to behold the creature on its own, and something else entirely to see it chowing down. So, uh, don’t watch if you’re afraid of bugs.
