A woman arrested for giving water to pigs is causing an uproar both by vegans and those who find them to be silly.
Anita Krajnc is the co-founder of Toronto Pig Save, a vegan organisation which holds vigils for animals on their way to be slaughtered. You may have seen some of their other videos documenting the last moments of the lives of slaughtered animals, like pigs, cows and other farm animals.
Krajnc says she was verbally assaulted for her actions by the man driving the animals to the slaughterhouse during the incident, which happened this past summer.
The awkward exchange was caught in the video above, and it resulted in Anita getting arrested on September 9. She’s now awaiting a court case and faces a potential jail sentence of ten years.
When the charges were announced, Anita’s only response was: “Offering water to a thirsty pig is an act of compassion. It is not only a right, but a duty we all share. Causing the pigs to suffer in the first place is what is wrong. I face these criminal charges with dignity, knowing that truth and justice are on my side.”
In the video, you can see Krajnc approach the vehicle in Burlington, Vermont, to give water to a few pigs. And then the driver shows up.
“You know what, these are not humans, you dumb frickin’ broad,” he tells her. “You do it again, and I’ll slap it out of your hands.”
According to New York farmer-turned-vegan Bob Comis the pigs were in fact exhibiting signs of “severe heat stress” and needed help.
