Just about every single woman we know wears hair ties around their wrist when their hair isn’t up in a ponytail or bun. It’s the best place to keep them, especially since you never know when you’ll feel like putting your locks up and out of your face.
But Audree Kopp recently learned that keeping hair ties on her wrist could prove fatal.
According to CBS Philly, Kopp had to be hospitalized after contracting a life-threatening infection. Initially, it started off as just a small bump on her wrist and she didn’t think much of it. That is, until that bump continued to grow bigger.
Despite her doctor’s efforts to treat the infection with antibiotics, nothing helped bring down the pain and swelling.
“It just kept getting bigger, and redder, and worse,” she explained.
Eventually, she ended up in the emergency room and had to undergo surgery.
Dr. Amit Gupta of Norton Healthcare told CBS Philly that some bacteria from the woman’s hair tie probably got under her skin.
Luckily for Kopp, she got the help she needed just in time.
“Once it gets into your bloodstream, people have been known to go into a coma, your body shuts down,” she said.
