Meet the Woman Who Is Eating Nothing but Pet Food for a Month

The only time we’ve ever watched someone eat pet food and actually enjoy it was on TLC’s My Strange Addiction, when we saw a woman who was so addicted to cat food that she consumed about 900 kitty treats every single day.

That was, until we met Dorothy Hunter, owner of the Paw’s Natural Pet Emporium stores in Richland and Kennewick, Washington, who is eating nothing but pet food for an entire month in order to prove the products she sells for animals are indeed healthy.

Hunter’s mission began one day while working at one of her shops.

“I didn’t have time to get a snack, so I grabbed a bag of treats off the counter, and I was like, wow, you know, these read better than normal people treats,” she told NBC affiliate KNDO. “So I started eating the treats and I was like, you know, I could do this for 30 days.”

It’s not suprising that Hunter has chosen to put her money where her mouth is and eat the food she distributes at both locations. The multi-billion dollar US pet food industry has been known to use grains considered “unfit for human consumption,” slaughterhouse offal and waste products as a convenient way to turn a profit.

Much of the time, pet food contains discarded ingredients such as hooves, heads, udders, intestines and cancerous and diseased animal parts, which are highly contaminated. While some of these toxins are destroyed during processing, others are not.

Given the types of things manufacturers put in pet food, it’s not uncommon for bad things to happen.

But Hunter takes pride in what her stores sell to the public, despite the fact that some products gave her “dog gas.” The brands she sells have nutritional value and are free from animal by-products and preservatives.

Watch as she explores the differences between what consumers think they are buying and what they are actually getting in the video above. Her YouTube channel features her (and her husband) taste-testing various brands of pet food and treats, such as kibble, dog treats and canned meat.

Shockingly, she makes dog food look kind of tasty. Well, at least most of the time — watching the majority of her videos just makes us gag.
