Woman Explains Smiling Mugshot After Arson Arrest – Says She Had to ‘Get Rid of the Devil’s Temple’

You wouldn’t expect an arrested suspect to be particularly happy while getting their mugshot snapped—but one such photo has quickly gone viral. A Texas woman arrested for arson radiates pure joy in her mugshot, and now she’s decided to share exactly why she looks so happy.

“Most people can’t understand the smiling mugshot,” Suzanne Duarte told, 41, CBS News from Dallas County Jail. Duarte was arrested for trying to burn down a yoga studio that she often attended.

According to Duarte, she had an ongoing dispute with two men associated with the American Power Yoga studio. She said that after years of alleged harassment from them. Apparently, at least one of the men had been relentlessly pursuing her in a romantic and sexual nature despite her refusals.

“I thought it was going to make me happy, to burn the place that had brought me so much pain and suffering,” Duarte said.

So, in an attempt to let go of her angry, she said she went to the studio late one night—so no one would be there—with a baseball bat and a can of gasoline and set to work.

Duarte said she didn’t want to cause anyone physical harm, she just wanted to damage the studio.

“Just to set it on fire, just destroy it, get rid of the devil’s temple,” she said.

Although firefighters had to evacuate surrounding businesses for fear that the entire shopping center could catch fire. No injuries were reported.

Duarte is held on $16,000 bond, but promises that if she gets out she will not try make another attempt to burn down the studio.

A statement from American Power Yoga says the studio has been under new ownership for several months, and that they have not heard of any disputes until now.
