A 23-year-old woman in Ohio called 911 to report her infant son had stopped breathing. What happened next led to a shocking confession and the truth behind the deaths of her two other sons who died months earlier.
According to reports from NBC News, Brittany Pilkington called for help only after her husband returned to work and realized the child was unresponsive.
Pilkington told the dispatcher that her son, three-month-old Noah wasn’t breathing and was turning white.
Officers responded to the scene with emergency help, but it was too late. The child was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
Authorities were already investigating the suspicious deaths of two of Pilkington’s other children, four-year-old Gavin who died in April and three-month-old Niall who died a year previously. In each death, it was their father who found the unresponsive after he returned home from work. The police do not believe the father, 43-year-old Joseph Pilkington, was involved in the deaths.
After Noah’s death, Pilkington eventually confessed to detectives that she killed all three children. According to reports, she told authorities that she suffocated the boys by placing blankets over their heads.
According to the county prosecutor, William Goslee, Pilkington claims she was “protecting” her 3-year-old daughter. Apparently felt her husband paid more attention to the boys than he did to their daughter.
Goslee told the Columbus Dispatch:
“In her mind, she was protecting her daughter from being not as loved as the boys were by their father.”
Pilkington’s family said that the daughter, Hailey, and Noah had previously been removed from her custody while detectives investigated the deaths of the first two children. They were later returned to their parents.
Hailey has now been placed in the care of Logan County Children Services.
Pilkington has been charged with three counts of murder.
