Woman with Massive Tumor Turned Away at Four Hospitals Due to Lack of Insurance

Dora Lewis is a Newton County woman who was refused help at four hospitals before one agreed to remove a massive, painful tumor growing inside her.

The reason she was turned away so many times: no insurance. The 59-year-old said she had been trying to get coverage since the death of her husband a few years back, but it wasn’t till she realized she had a tumor that not having insurance turned into a problem.

“I didn’t know it was a tumor in there. I thought I was just gaining weight at first,” Lewis said about the non-cancerous tumor which is wrapped around her ovaries.

But over the course of two months, the tumor had reached the size of a beach ball.

“It’s getting bigger every day,” she told reporters. “I can feel it on my body. My heart hurts a little bit.”

When she tried to get help and have doctors remove it, she said no one would agree to do the surgery, mainly for lack of insurance.

Finally one day the pain was so intense Lewis had to call 911. She was taken to Emory University Hospital where a doctor told her she would finally get the surgery she was looking for, even without money.

Lewis’ surgery date is set for June 10th.

“It would feel great, now, if I could get it out today. Right now. It would be a blessing,” says Lewis. But in the meanwhile, she asks everyone to pray for her.
