Woman Wakes Up from Coma, Discovers She Gave Birth

Doctors told family that Sharista Giles had little chance of ever waking up, after she was left in a coma following a car accident in December. Not only has the 20-year-old now opened her eyes, but she has seen her child for the very first time, ABC News reported.

Giles was apparently five months pregnant when she was in the horrific car accident that nearly claimed her life.

“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do,” said Beverely Giles, Giles’ aunt.

In January, doctors were forced to deliver the baby while Giles was still unconscious. The child, a baby boy, was reportedly less than two pounds when he was born.

According to her family, despite what doctors said Giles awoke last week and even responded to family with blinks and hand squeezes. More importantly, Giles finally learned about the birth of her son.

Shown a picture of her baby, family said Giles followed the photo—even turning her neck and head to see the picture again, when it was placed on a bedside bulletin board.

Details of Giles’ recovery and prognosis are not yet known, however her baby remains in the neonatal intensive care unit at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Her family hopes to bring her son to visit as soon as he is released.
