Barbarella Buchner, 48, has been happily married for 10 years as of this month. What’s the twist on her wedded bliss? She married her two cats, named Spider and Lugosi. She said her cat-husbands make her happier than any man could, and has no desire to search for a human mate.
Buchner is a web designer, originally from London. No stranger to long-term relationships, she thought she would never find love again after her last human relationship came to an end after seven years.
“My ex was the most important person in my life until things stopped working between us,” she told The Daily Mail. “We ended up sleeping in separate rooms.”
She said that although she cried for weeks after the break-up, she found comfort in Spider and Lugosi. She realized that the emotional support from her cats and her love for them was stronger than any she had ever felt for a human. Through a site called marryyourpet.com, she took the plunge and was given a certificate of marriage to her cats.
As a symbol of her commitment, she has tattooed their initials on her right leg.
Her choice of life partners has not been without criticism—in addition to accusations of bigamy for marrying two cats, Buchner is also judged because Spider and Lugosi are brothers. But she is quick to set the record straight.
“Obviously I don’t have sex with my cats. It’s just pure, spiritual unconditional love on both sides, as simple as that,” she said. Buchner says she has no regrets, and is unconcerned with what people might say.
Despite the fact that Lugosi and Spider are already 14 years old, Buchner says she has no plans to ever remarry after they die.
